Sunset

I lay to the sky, staring up.

A fickle feeling and a fleeting flutter of fervent emotion crosses me; a passing sensation as I watch the clouds drift by.

I dream of a better past. A better present. A better future. No matter how far out of reach they may seem, I always seek to chase them, however impossible. Maybe an erasure of a problem I encountered in the past, a feeling I seek to expel, or a vision of a possible life I wish to live; these thoughts omnipresent, soar through my mind, but not as much as harmful as they are hopeful.

The sun sets behind the grey blanket of clouds in the distance, masking the sky in a masquerade of deep oranges mingled with dancing lilacs, painting the sky in a vivid hue. Though chaotic and unorganised in nature, it remains cathartic whilst graceful, disorganised as characteristic of natural beauty.

An overwhelming emotion envelops me, a twisting and encompassing feeling. However strong it grows however, I cannot label it. Whether it is borne of a longing, frustration, turmoil, unknowing: this emotion lies near undetermined. Rather one would be inclined to call it a form of melancholy. Through this melancholy, I am however content. Content to watch the sky continue to dance, the gradients of light stirring in a synchrony of hues.

Further I watch the sky as it fades to a deep purple, drowning out the sky in a rising darkness until the ambient light of the city blends amongst the dawning blues and cloudy greys of the coming night. The colours of streetlights illuminate the distant roads, trickling the hillside with a field of twinkling lights. The light of house and city mingle in the sky, providing a faint orange tinge to the remaining clouds scattered from the horizon.

Bright as it is, the moon remains hidden. Though the heavens depicted are typically littered with twinkling stars and the illumination of the moon, the night sky sits with a dull grey, encompassed by only artificial hues of the surrounding neighbourhood. A sigh escapes me, and I stare up once more; dreaming

I wish I could see the stars from here.
